What Animal Digs Up Newly Planted Flowers

  • Chicken wire! I use it for everything...institute protectors and plant support. Look at the size yous want to protect...if your plants are still seedlings, you merely lay information technology over them. If bigger than that, just cutting a circle out of information technology to snug your plant. For peonies, for instance, I cut out a identify just large enough to protect clay effectually it...and so as they grow I gently lift the whole slice up to human action every bit establish supports. Cheap, quick, constructive and virtually impossible for raccoons to dig through/effectually

    Hot Pepper Juice

  • Carol is right. The raccoons are likely after the bugs living on the soil and in the soil.

  • If you use milkyspore leap and fall this year it will multiplying the soil and get rid of the grubs they are excavation to snack on...no food,,,no raccoons.

  • I had the same problem, I scattered a jar of hot peppers through the garden and had no more issues with raccoons or squirrels.

  • Good luck ♥ We've had raccoon visitors during the night in my back yard several times over the years. They would catch the koi in my swimming. Now it would be unlike if they would eat them, but they would just play with them and exit them all over the one thousand. I've tried animal control in our expanse, they said they wouldn't assist u.s.a., just to get a Havahart trap, and so release them at to the lowest degree 100 miles abroad because they travel that and more. An exterminator was way as well expensive. Had a trap, tried, could never catch them...tried sardines, marshmallows, tuna, canned true cat nutrient and more. I devoured the web for info on how to get them to become. Tried criss crossing angling line throughout the back thousand, raccoon'southward didn't mind it, the dogs hated it. Lit the lawn up like a runway – didn't phase them, Human being hair, human urine, could have cared less nigh either, Tried "The Scarecrow" motion detector that hooks to the hose and sprays when it senses motion. Raccoon'southward loved it,Dogs were scared of it and refused to get out during the day even when it was off. Tried coyote urine, didn't stage the coons one flake. Tried little red flashing lights around the perimeter of the chiliad, raccoon's didn't notice them. Summer came and they stopped coming. Nosotros had no birdseed out for the wild birds, no canis familiaris food out, zilch. They came back the following winter and brought friends. Tried everything over again to no avail. Got upwards 1 morning and they were still hither! They were usually gone by and then. I of my dogs slipped....pushed by me as I was trying to shoo them abroad. She was a Slap-up Dane....they took her down. Now I beloved all animals, only don't come to my place and mess with mine. My sons stayed upwards the following night, shot 2 of them. They haven't been back since. It was horrid, the screams my poor dog let out as they were biting her. Delight be careful. I wouldn't attempt to even catch it, You have to pick up that wire cage after all!. They are violent and volition bite. Be careful please.

    • Run into 1 previous
    • Sad, but generally animals effort to protect themselves when attacked. I saw a dog rip out the side of a racoon and her babe licked information technology clean for several weeks before she died. I doubtable she was but protecting her babies. Best to keep dogs (specially set on dogs) and raccoons dissever.

  • Debbie - my heart goes out to yous. Years ago, my ex and I bought a business firm from a couple who had caged a raccoon in the back g. It was gone by the time we took possession. Eventually, squirrels moved into the cranium and while we were trying to find a solution, the raccoon family unit moved in and kicked out the squirrels. They tore up garbage around the neighbourhood. We finally live trapped a mother and iii young ones. Nosotros used hammer prongs to pick up the cage....never put our fingers through. When we finally evicted them and replaced all the fascia they had destroyed, we had to supercede all the insulation in the attic as information technology was soaked with urine and carrion. People recall raccoons take such beautiful footling faces. I'k with you lot. I beloved animals and respect their right to live but when they encroach on and damage your belongings, well....they deserve what they become. And then sorry your poor dog was injured trying to defend you and your belongings. Happy you got rid of them finally.

  • I wish I knew!! They are worse this year than e'er before. Nosotros've relocated xi of them so far. They get on my deck and dig up al my beautiful potted flowers. Omg. Information technology makes me then mad. Why practise they dig up my potted flowers??? Every 24-hour interval I wake up to more devastation. I'g furious.

    • They are looking for grubs and bugs in the dirt. And yes they are persistent

  • We've tried everything and last night they had a party on my deck, even moved the furniture!

I employ what they call a domestic dog proof trap, then shoot them with a shotgun. Seems cruel, but information technology works. Improve than seeing my wife cry because her freshly planted flowers were dug up the nighttime after she planted them.

    • We had the aforementioned thought! BUT. Be certain there aren't any cats around. Cats can get their paws inside that trap likewise. Nosotros accept a iii legged cat for proof!

  • I love the internet! I tin ever observe a solution to a trouble. Better yet I tin can discover ppl with like experiences. I'm having issues with coons too. Plainly they really like basil and cilantro. They've destroyed my plants and flowers for ii nights in a row. Nosotros live in the sticks as well. Never had any issues with critters. Thank you to everyone who posted. I accept some hope now that I can go rid of them.

  • Exist careful with that trap. It says simply raccoons can get their paws inside for the bait. Nosotros had the aforementioned idea you practise. 1 of our cats accidentally got out and stuck her paw inside for the bait. She writhed so badly she broke her front leg. Ended upwardly having to amputate it.

Unfortunately we lost our Groovy Dane to that coon fight.

They stayed abroad for several years. Just then returned, even bolder. They came around even during the daytime - every afternoon at 2 pm they'd stroll through the thousand. Over the years since Cyndar (great Dane) we adopted an American Staffordshire Terrier. During one of the coons strolls one day Tora (Amstaf) got ane pinned against our neighbors debate. Our neighbors Shepherd's were on the other side barking and going crazy. The coon got away from Tora, climbed the debate over into the shepherd's. Our neighbor shot at it merely missed. It jumped over the front of the fence and nonchalantly walked away. Again they stayed away for several years.

Final night the guys were coming domicile from the store and thought 6 dogs were crossing the route. Turned out to exist raccoons! They couldn't believe the size of them. They were a few streets away, hoping they stay over there.

Wishing all skilful luck. I know what kind of nuisance they can be and how dangerous they are. Exist SAFE!!

  • I sprinkle cayenne pepper on clay and that seemed to solve the problem.

Uggg, raccoons, horrid what they volition do. And where in that location is one, there are always more. Worse if they have a family unit. I used to have a terrible time with them. Had to become rid of them. If you know what I mean.

Awful things, fighting all night long, conveying on creating such a racket. Sorry you are going through this

  • Set traps and relocate them.

  • A nasty smell or taste tin can repel and raccoons. Some commercial repellents contain a bittering amanuensis or pepper. When such repellents are applied on or effectually your flowerbeds' plants and unwanted animal visitors smell or taste them, the animals may leave your flowerbeds alone. Claret meal and mothballs also are used equally repellents. Just like other repellents, even so, they're not guaranteed to piece of work. An inexpensive alternative is to place rags in several bowls, douse them with ammonia and set the bowls near your flowerbeds. The ammonia's olfactory property may deter the critters.

  • I have the same problem. I tried for 2 years to constitute Lily of the Valley and they got dug up each time. So this year I got a big circumvolve of wire fence to protect them.

After trying all of the methods listed in this discussion I caged my vegetable beds with craven wire and hinged lids. That kept them out of the vegetable beds. Every bit for the flower beds, I use heavy rocks effectually all the plants, weighing down chicken wire.
